Serra International is a world wide organization with tens of thousands of members and was founded over seventy years ago by a group of Catholic laymen. The objective of Serra International is to foster and promote vocations to the priesthood and vowed religious life in the Catholic Church.
Lloyd Keller RECEIVED AN AWARD
At the regular meting of the SERRA CLUB OF OMAHA on November 12, 2012, Lloyd Keller received the coveted award for his 50th anniversary of joining Serra. In the award, Serra International Region IX Director Homer Radford noted that “You are one of only two Serrans in Region IX recognzed for a lifetime of support for the mission of Serra International. You became a member of your club on January 1, 1962. Thank you for your 50 years of active participation.” Tim O’Neill, Board member of the USA Council, and Doug Quinn, Club President, made the presentation in Mr. Radford’s behalf.
During the past 50 years Lloyd served as a board a board member for several years. He also served as president and in several vice president positions. He was secretary, treasurer, and also chairman of several committees.. Lloyd served as either the commentator or lector on the weekly Mass for Shut-ins TV show for over 30 years; His team ws scheduled during the month of July each year.
Lloyd produced and printed the first monthly newsletter for the Serra Club of Omaha; he mailed it to each member and continued this effort for about 3 years, all before computers were available. Lloyd also produced the first club roster in 1981 and directed that project for about 10 years. The late Msgr. John Flynn asked Lloyd to serve on his Priests’ Jubilee Committee; Lloyd served as the club’s representative on that committee for over 10 years
Lloyd was the second Serran in the Diocese of Omaha to celebrate his son’s ordination to the priesthood. His son, the late Rev. Daniel Keller celebrated his silver jubilee in 2007 and passed away on March 8, 2010.
The first member of the Serra Club of Omaha to celebrate his son’s ordination was the club’s first President, the late Ed Whelan; his son, Msgr. William Whelan, is currently club Chaplin for the Serra Club of Omaha.
In response, Lloyd said: “It is with great humility that I accept this award and I thank all three of you for this presentation. I especially thank all members of the Serra Club of Omaha for making this club the tremendously outstanding institution that it is. My induction many years ago seems like only yesterday.”
